Rubbish collection delayed, annual commemorative program planned

EAST PROVIDENCE — The City of East Providence makes two announcements pertaining to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The Public Works Department reminds residents there will be no rubbish or recycling collection on Monday, Jan. 21. Monday’s rubbish and recycling will be collected on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and rubbish and recycling collections for the remainder of the week will be delayed one day. Residents are asked to have rubbish containers at the curbline by 6 a.m. for collection.

In addition, the East Providence Office of Affirmative Action/EEO presents its annual Reverend Dr. King commemorative program on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at City Hall, 145 Taunton Ave., in the City Council Chambers from 6-7 p.m.

This is a family friendly event and all are invited to attend.

Singing Performances by the combined and beautiful voices of: Orlo Avenue Elementary School and Whiteknact Elementary School, directed by Mr. Rachdouni, Music Teacher; Student Art Work and Essay Showcase supported by teachers Ms. Gustafson (Art) and Mrs. Cahir (Library); and guest speaker Mrs. Angie Lovegrove, Senior Investigator at Commission for Human Rights and Chairwoman of the East Providence Affirmative Action Committee. As well a historical display of African-American memorabilia Mrs. Onna Moniz-John will be available for viewing.

The event is free and open to the public.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
