EAST PROVIDENCE — According to East Providence Police, the victim of an automobile accident in Riverside Monday afternoon, Feb. 18, passed away from the injuries he sustained in the crash that took place on Forbes Street at approximately 1 p.m.

The victim, Valdano Almeida, 26 of East Providence, succumbed overnight at Rhode Island Hospital.

The suspect, Arnold Butler, 35 and also of East Providence, was arraigned in District Court Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, on a charge of Driving Under the Influence, death resulting. Surety bail was set at $15,000.

The accident occurred on Forbes Street near Hospital Road, where Mr. Almeida lived. Investigators at the scene said upon initial observations Mr. Butler was attempting to pass a slower moving vehicle when his car struck Mr. Almeida, who was walking in the street because of the day’s snowy conditions. The sidewalks in the area had not as of the time of the accident been cleared.

Police said Mr. Butler is suspected of being impaired by prescription drugs, not alcohol.
