PORTSMOUTH — The East Providence High School boys’ and girls’ outdoor track and field teams competed in their 2018 Eastern Division Championship Meets last week at Portsmouth’s Kennedy Field, the former finishing fourth and the latter fifth.
Rogers, unbeaten in 12 dual meets during the regular season, won the boys’ title with 161 points. LaSalle jumped two spots from the duals standings to place second with 140 while Barrington dropped a place to finish third with 85. The Townies, like the Rams, moved up two spots from duals to place fourth with 69. The host Patriots, third in the regular season, were fifth last week with 47.
Form held from the regular season on the girls’ side in places 1-3 as Barrington, 13-0 in duals, won the meet championship with 168 points. LaSalle was second with 120 and Portsmouth was third with 80. Bay View, fifth behind E.P. in duals, leapfrogged the Townies into fourth last week with 73 points. East Providence was fifth with 68.
Boys’ results
Junior standout Clinton Ogunronbi had a hand in 46 of the Townies' points, including 10 for his victory in the long jump. Ogunronbi bettered the field with a distance of 21 feet, 6.5 inches.
Ogunronbi also had a pair of top three finishes in the sprints, placing second (23.79) to LaSalle’s Jolon O’Connor (23.37) in the 200 meters and third (11.68) in the 100 behind O’Connor (11.47) and Shea’s Jaylen Smith (11.51).
Also, Ogunronbi was joined by Dion Hazard, Exondus Barnes and Jason Santiago in placing third (45.48) in the 4x100 relay won by LaSalle (44.84).
Barnes, a junior, was the other individual winner for the Townies as he set the bar in the high jump by clearing 5’8.” Teammate Ednilson Silva shared fourth in the event at 5’4.” In addition, Barnes was second to Ogunronbi in the long jump (20’10”) and Silva fourth (20’2”).
Sophomore Justin Barahona was fourth for the Townies in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.14. Josh Roy of Barrington won the event in 16.14. Santiago added a solo third in the triple jump, covering 38’8.25.” Ty Medeiros of Rogers won the event with a 43’8.25.”
Girls’ results
Like Ogunronbi on the boys’ side, junior Hasna Badji contributed a host of points to the EPHS girls at the division meet, including an individual win.
Badji won the 300 meter hurdles for East Providence, doing so while setting a new meet record time of 46.62. Badji bettered the previous mark of 46.9 set by Portsmouth’s Jackie Corsetti in 2007. Badji was also fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.18), the event won by LaSalle’s Abigail Creamer (16.26).
Badji, Christy Long, Mary Ellen Pinson and Shaniah Hazard ran second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:18.5, just under a second behind the winning time of 4:17.74 clocked by Barrington. Badji ran a leg as well of the 4x1 relay team along with Alyssa DeOliveira, Ashley DeOliveira and Hazard that placed third in 53.17. The LaSalle quartet set a new meet record in winning the event in 50.59. Also in the relays, Long, Eva Caron, Briana Santos and Chantel Reis were fourth in the 4x8 with a 10:52.64. Portsmouth set a new meet record to win the event in 9:50.61.
East Providence’s other solo win was provided by sophomore Haley Teodoro, who bested LaSalle’s Kyra Mattera on attempts to win the high jump for the Townies as both athletes cleared 4’11.”
Other individual scorers for East Providence included Hazard throwing 99’ to place second in the javelin behind Bay View’s Noelya Delacruz, who threw a winning distance of 113’9.” Michaela Doro in fourth in the hammer throw (131’10”). Barrington’s Annika Kelly won the event with a (163’10”). Alyssa DeOliveira was fifth in the 100 with a 13.69. Claire Collins of LaSalle won the event in 13.41.
Of note as well locally, Bay View’s Delacruz also won the shotput with a 36’10.50” while the Bengals’ Aliya Barrows won the both the 200 meters (26.65) and 400 (58.76).
