EPHS boys’ tennis team season ends in quarterfinal playoff loss

Townies conclude 2019 boys’ and girls’ lacrosse campaigns

The rebound season came to a close Tuesday, May 21, for the East Providence High School boys’ tennis team in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Division III championship tournament after the fifth-seeded Townies fell to host and fourth-seeded Scituate by a 4-2 score.
Constantino Capobianco and Louis Mesi accounted for the two EPHS points with victories in singles action. Capobianco defeated the Spartans’ Shane Langton, 6-2 and 6-3, at the first position. Mesi, likewise, won his outing at the third spot in straight sets over Scituate’s Noah Brown, 3-and-2.
The Townies, who went just 3-23 the past two years competing in Division II, didn’t go down without a fight. The Spartans won the two other singles points, but East Providence’s Jared Zollo, at No. 2, and Jackson Ponte, at four, each took their opponents to the third and final set before falling. Scituate took both of the doubles matches completed in two sets.
The Townies finished their season with a 10-4 overall record in league matches. Scituate, which improved to 12-2 overall, advanced to the semifinals opposite top-seeded Westerly, also 12-2. The Spartans, Bulldogs, Coventry and the Shea/Tolman co-op all finished the regular season with 11-2 marks. Their playoff seeds were determined by a series of tiebreakers.
Of note as well, Capobianco represented East Providence in singles at the state individual championship tournament where he fell to Barrington’s Owen Voight in straight sets in the opening round.
Boys’ lacrosse
The EPHS boys’ lacrosse team concluded its season two weeks ago with a last-minute, 3-2 victory over Scituate. Team-leading scorer Owen Charron netted the decisive tally in the waning moments of the game as the Townies finished their Division III schedule with a 3-11 record.
Alex Crowley assisted on the goal, the second of the day for Charron, who paced EPHS with nine goals for the spring. John Voll added the other goal, his sixth of the year. Sean Baird made 12 saves in net for the Townies.
Charron’s nine goals also led the team in total points scored. Voll had seven points, including an assist. Noah Kollett added six points, all goals.
Girls’ lacrosse
The EPHS girls’ lacrosse team finished winless (0-12) in its first season back playing at the Division III level. The Townies’ finale last week against playoff top seed and unbeaten Lincoln High (12-0) was cancelled after the referees assigned to the contest did not show.
Ashley Dias led EPHS in points for the spring with 23 total, scoring 18 goals and assisting on five. Kylie Bahry had 10 goals and two assists for 12 points and Olivia Williams had 11 points on 10 goals and one helper.
