In a part of the state known for secluded, fabulous oceanfront cottages, the home at 44 Beach Drive in Little Compton is truly unique. The prevailing color is blue – ocean blue – as the vast Atlantic owns the horizon with views from virtually every room in the home.
Architect Heather Lambert designed this shingle-style contemporary, on 1.3 private waterfront acres on Chase Point, to maximize views. Knowing that they would enjoy the company of guests throughout the summer, the original owners wanted the home to provide an abundance of private bedrooms and extra sleeping areas, while being open enough to entertain a crowd.
Lambert succeeded, with a 104-foot-long floor plan with sleeping quarters at each end, and the kitchen, living and dining area — one large room — sited at the heart of the home. Extra-wide windows and doors open on an expansive deck, with a staircase leading down to the rolling green lawn. Likewise, each of the five bedrooms has its own direct access to the outdoors. In addition to the five bedrooms and bathrooms in the main house, there is a guest suite over the three-car garage.
Though designed with summer in mind, the home is well prepared for inclement weather with three large stone fireplaces inside, and another on the second-floor deck, to take the chill out of late summer evenings. Its steel-reinforced substructure is designed to withstand the strongest hurricane force winds.
A catering kitchen supplements the open gourmet kitchen, with a layout that would make anyone feel like an Iron Chef. Additional perks include a spa, a steam room, and an integrated sound system. Tucked into the landscape, private, with unparalleled ocean views, this is a “cottage” that will make you wish summer truly were endless.
