Meet Barbara Jagolinzer: Former nurse, mother, grandmother, Realtor

Family: “My husband, Marc, and I have three children. Our youngest son, Jonathan, is a financial planner in Tysons Corner, Va. Our oldest, Charles, is an attorney in San Diego, and he and his wife, Rachelle, have a 3-year-old son, Max Ethan, who is just amazing: he’s bright, articulate, and he’s always thinking one step ahead. And our daughter, Sarah, just celebrated her wedding last weekend at Oceancliff. It was wonderful, the weather was perfect, the whole family was together, and I have not come down from it yet!”

What brought you to Rhode Island: “I grew up in the Bronx, the third child of four. I was a student nurse at the Hunter College Bellevue School of Nursing, and my older brother, a physician, was stationed in Newport at the Naval Hospital. He encouraged me to spend the summer here with his family. I had just said goodbye to a boyfriend of three years who left for medical school in California, so it seemed like a good plan.”

Why real estate: “I was working as a nurse, and I had a friend who was going through the process of earning her real estate license. It just occurred to me that I was ready for a new challenge. What’s interesting is that real estate requires many of the same skills as nursing: you need to listen, understand a person’s goals, and assess their needs. I love the diversity of real estate. No two clients, properties, or reasons for buying or selling, are alike.”

On choosing the right agent: “You need to interview a prospective agent to be sure that you have found someone who will represent your best interests, and appreciate your goals. Houses are what we sell, but it’s about serving people and helping them reach their goals. Everyone has different needs, and a different story.”

Your story: “I love the story of how I met Marc. He’s the Rabbi of the Temple Shalom, and that first summer in Newport my brother took me to services and literally led me by the hand to meet the Rabbi. Marc asked me on a date on the spot. I said yes, confident I would be the only one of my classmates who dated a clergyman over the summer. We had eight dates in 10 days! He proposed on the 10th day. I was overwhelmed, and I told Marc I would sleep on it. Then I went home and got a call from my former boyfriend in California who told me he missed me, and then he proposed! The next day, I made the right choice. It’s been 38 wonderful years.”

On reputation: “I have always taken my professional reputation very seriously. I once had a client call who told me that they asked for a ‘tough’ Realtor and my name came up. I didn’t know if I should feel offended or complimented! I called a colleague that I respected and he reassured me that being thought of as someone you do not tread on is a good thing. Ultimately, my clients know they can count on me for objective, informed information. I mean what I say, and I never over-promise or under-produce.”

Leisure time: “I love walking the beach and taking Zumba classes. I like to read but I don’t want to waste time with a book I’m not going to love so I poll friends. Recent favorites include ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ trilogy and ‘The Glass Castle.’ “

Food: “I used to be a huge cook but these days I am better at making reservations! Our favorite restaurant is probably the Col. Blackinton Inn in Attleboro. We also love the S.S. Dion in Bristol – it’s simple, and their swordfish is the best I have ever eaten, anywhere.”

Honors: “I’ve served in leadership roles with the Newport County Board of Realtors, the Women’s Council of Realtors, and the Council of Residential Specialists (CRS.) I have been named both Entrepreneur of the Year and Member of the Year by the Women’s Council, but the honor of which I am most proud was being named Newport County Realtor of the Year in 2000, because I was selected by my peers.”

Why I love my job: “People are my passion, my fascination – and the nurse in me wants to help them, and help them enjoy the process, though it can be a tricky and costly. It’s my job to navigate these waters with experience, intelligence, and humor. And when it is all said and done, I am privileged to say that many of my clients have become dear, lifelong friends.”
