Why Rhode Island: “I came here in 2004 to compete in the Newport to Bermuda race. On my way to Newport from the airport, I got a call saying that the race wasn’t going to happen — at least it wasn’t going to happen for the team I was planning to race with. By the time I returned to London I had fallen in love with Newport, so I bought a house here. In 2007 I moved here permanently.”

Why London: “I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware – the second-smallest (albeit slightly more business-friendly) state. After graduating from Wilmington Friends I studied economics at Harvard College, and worked in financial services in New York City for two years. My firm transferred me to the U.K. and I lived there for eighteen years.”

Why real estate: “I came into real estate because I like property and fine homes, I love this area, and I love helping people relocate here and integrate into the community. I have always worked in a field with a sales and marketing angle, but real estate is so personal — banking, not so much. Real estate is a way for me to apply my skills in a much more personal way.”

Luxury homes: “I like working with luxury properties and helping people with transitions — not only people moving to the area but also clients who have a wonderful family home but their lifestyle and needs have changed. It’s first and foremost a customer service-driven business. My clients appreciate my professionalism, something that’s reinforced when they refer their friends and associates, and that’s gratifying.”

Home: “I live in a lovely converted carriage house, classic Newport. It has a nice little garden that needs more of my attention than it gets. I always see myself having a base in Newport. It’s a stunningly beautiful place.”

Likes: “I love travel, and I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of the world, much of Asia, North Africa as well as Kenya, the Middle East, Europe, Scandinavia, the Galapagos Islands, Hawaii and the Caribbean — which is where my next trip will be, sailing, perhaps in the British Virgin Islands. Travel expands your horizons as well as helps you understand better who you are and where you’re from.”

Sailing: “I love sailing. I’ve sailed competitively for many years, and participated in two legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, from Portugal through the Panama Canal and on to Hawaii. I got off in Hawaii, which was fortunate. The weather took a bad turn for the second half of the Pacific crossing. These days I like to help on the race committee during Monday night racing, as well as the Shields fleet races on Wednesday nights at Ida Lewis. And I like cruising on friends’ boats.”

Activities: “I also really enjoy the theater, American and European history, and reading — I just finished ‘Starboard Sea’ and really enjoyed it. I’m involved at the Newport Art Museum, the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, the Harvard Club of Rhode Island, the Newport Preservation Society and the Junior League of Rhode Island.”
