With over an acre of land on Barrington’s prestigious Rumstick Road (it’s number 66), the home is perfectly situated for walks to the town center, the harbor, and the bike path.
Owners Brian and Lanette Budovsky purchased the home in 2007 from a family who owned the property for over 50 years while raising five children. The Budovskys fell in love with the old farmhouse and detached barn, and hired Mary Brewster of Brewster Thornton Architects to draw plans for a large addition. Brewster’s mandate was to maintain the integrity of the property while making the addition fit seamlessly, with wrap-around porches, detailed moldings, and period charm. The project was scheduled to take two years to complete and with two young girls, the Budovskys couldn’t wait that long to be settled. So, when another property became available, they purchased that instead, and changed their plans for their beloved farmhouse.
Rather than selling the property and taking a chance of the home being demolished or degraded they again turned to Brewster Thornton Architects, with architect Patrick Connors drawing plans to completely remodel the property. The details were important; the exterior was redone in the same manner as the original with copper flashings; cedar siding and porch rails; the windows were upgraded and the front door was milled to replicate the original—all in hopes of lasting another 125 years. The interior was given the same care and received re-milled doors, base and crown moldings, and hardwood floors replaced with antique river-recovered heart pine. The original mahogany stair rail and newel posts were replicated; and a beautiful new fireplace with a mahogany mantel, natural stone hearth and surround and custom built-in bookcases were created.
The highest quality and level of detail is evident throughout the 2100 square-foot, three bedroom, two and a half bath home. The gourmet kitchen includes top-of-the-line appliances and granite countertops; and the master bath features a marble shower, and the second floor bathrooms are of the highest quality, with heated marble floors, crackle ceramic tile and bead board. There is a large pantry and laundry room off the kitchen, as well as a mud room and half bath by the back entrance. Extensive landscaping has also been completed, with underground sprinklers, a new driveway, and a lovely patio area.
