Portsmouth schools to start after Labor Day next year

PORTSMOUTH — For the first time in years, students will report back to public schools after Labor Day next year.

The School Committee Tuesday night unanimously approved the school calendar for the 2019-2020 academic year, which has students reporting for classes on Tuesday, Sept. 3 — the day after Labor Day.

Superintendent Ana Riley said since Labor Day falls early next year, it was an appropriate time to have school start after the holiday. Staff will be reporting on the Wednesday and Thursday before Labor Day, she said.

After the meeting, several committee members said it’s been at least five or six years since Portsmouth schools began after Labor Day.

The calendar includes three days off (Nov 27-29, 2019) for Thanksgiving recess, and an eight-day holiday recess from Dec. 23, 2019 to Jan. 1, 2020. Winter recess will be from Feb. 17-21, 2020, and spring recess from April 20-24, 2020.

The last day of school, barring any snow days, is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, 2020.

Release of the calendar is highly anticipated by parents, the superintendent said.

“We already have people calling for it so they can schedule next year,” Ms. Riley said.
