PORTSMOUTH — Plenty of Purple Pride was on display at Portsmouth Middle School's "rodeo" rec night on Friday, Jan. 18.
The "Purple Rodeo" event was an early kickoff to the Go Purple initiative (Jan. 20 to Feb. 1) to honor students who choose to be substance abuse-free.
The Go Purple campaign is an initiative of The Herren Project, a non-profit foundation established by Portsmouth resident Chris Herren, former NBA basketball player, motivational speaker, author and sobriety advocate. The Herren Project assists individuals and families struggling with addiction through treatment navigation, education and mentoring.
Locally, Go Purple is supported by the Newport County Prevention Coalition and the Portsmouth Prevention Coalition, which handed out free purple ribbons Saturday morning to residents at Clements' Marketplace. Residents and businesses are urged to display the ribbons prominently as a sign of support.
Local students will be taking the "I Am" pledge and be involved in numerous activities regarding substance abuse issues. The culminating event will be the fifth annual Dodgeball Tournament hosted by Patriots Committed on Jan. 31 in the Portsmouth High School field house.
