Do you know what was located at the triangle at East Main Road and Turnpike Avenue before Bank Newport?
This was one of the questions posed last week at the Portsmouth Historical Society’s second annual Portsmouth History Trivia contest, conducted at the Valley Inn.
Five teams vied for first prize and bragging rights in this contest. All questions related to Portsmouth history and were prepared in advance by town historian and Society president, Jim Garman, who acted as the judge and scorer for the evening. Portsmouth High School teacher Joe Cassady was the master of ceremonies.
When all the scores were totaled, the Rhody Rogues, a team of current and former Historical Society board members, had the highest score. This team, consisting of Anne Wagner, Lois Ryan, Nancy Crawford, Carolyn Nelson, Mike Pagliarani and Dave Duggan, was ruled ineligible for prizes due to their close Historical Society connections.
First place in the contest went to the “Stone/Thayer” team comprised of Mark and Terri-Lynn Thayer, and Steve and Marcia Stone. This team came in second in last year’s trivia contest. Each member of the “Stone/Thayer” team received a framed copy of the Portsmouth Compact of 1638 as their first place prize, but the real prize is bragging rights for the next year as Portsmouth history trivia contest winners.
In a close second place were the “Historians,” the team that won last year’s competition. Team members included Johna Spencer, Nathan Minese, Susan Mitchell, Pay Davis and Connie Harding.
Third-place honors went to team “Quatro Chicas,” comprised of Sue Burghouwt, Jamie Chappell, Michelle Kelley, and Anne Northup Burns.
Fourth place went to team “McCorrie,” which included Jane Roggero, Kristine Sumner, Cathy McManus, Cari Darminio, and Christopher McManus.
I’d like to thank all the individuals who participated in our trivia contest and the Society board members who assisted in putting this Portsmouth History Trivia contest on. Special thanks to Gary Gump, Rich Talipsky and Dave Faucher, as well as to Joe Occhi, whose Valley Inn provided the perfect venue for a history trivia night.
We at the Portsmouth Historical Society are always looking for new ways to present and promote our town’s unique history. We welcome new ideas and suggestions for doing this. If you have some ideas, please send them to phsinfo@portsmouthhistorical.org.
Oh, and by the way, it was Howard Johnson’s that was located at the triangle at East Main Road and Turnpike Avenue before Bank Newport (until 1965).
