Seven teens charged in alcohol- and drug-related incidents

Over the course of last week, Barrington police charged seven teenagers with illegal possession of either alcohol or marijuana. On Monday, March 10, police charged two 17-year-olds from East Providence with possession of marijuana, while they were at Barrington Beach.

According to the police report, at 9:12 p.m., an officer approached the vehicle to inform the occupants the beach closes at 9 p.m. When the driver, a 17-year-old male, rolled down his window, the officer reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana. The report said the teens appeared to be eating and watching a DVD on a portable device inside the car.

The office then asked the driver to step out of the vehicle and proceeded to pat him down. The officer allegedly found a marijuana cigarette in the driver's pocket. Upon further investigation, he also reportedly found a plastic bag with a brown leafy substance in it, which later tested positive for marijuana, on the floor, next to the female passenger. The report stated that the officer also found a glass bowl in girl's purse. The teenage girl denied the glass bowl was hers. The report has been sent to family court.

Two cars, 12 teens

On Friday, March 14, police charged Joshua L. Milich, 18, of 9 Harrison Ave., with possession of alcohol. At 8:45 p.m., a police officer observed two vehicles stopped side-by-side at the intersection of Payne and Watson roads. The officer first approached a 1995 Toyota carrying six occupants. There were three teenagers in the front seat and three teenagers in the back seat, none of the people were reportedly wearing seat belts.

The officer then approached Mr. Milich's vehicle. There was a passenger in the front seat and four passengers in the back seat. They were also reportedly not wearing their seat belts.

According to the report, the officer asked the driver and passengers to step out of the car and proceeded to ask the passengers about the contents in their backpacks. The officer allegedly found a glass pipe, which smelled like marijuana in one of the backpacks and confiscated it. When the officer asked Mr. Milich if there was anything else illegal in the vehicle, he reportedly admitted to two 30-packs of beer in the trunk. According to the report, the driver admitted the beer was his, but refused to say where he got it from.

Four teens, four 30-packs

Later that night, four teenagers — two 16-year-old boys, a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, all from Barrington — were charged with possession of alcohol.

Police received a tip about a possible underage drinking situation at the Massasoit Beach Association on Puritan Drive, at around 9:30 p.m.

An officer dispatched to the area parked behind an unattended vehicle. When the officer stepped out of the cruiser, he reportedly heard a rustling sound coming from the woods. He followed the sound and found an unopened 30-pack of Busch Light beer and several cans of Coors Light beer around a picnic table. He heard more sounds from the wooded area and called for back up.

The officer continued his walk and found another 30-pack of beer. He then spotted four teenagers about 500 feet away exiting the marsh onto a property on Meadowbrook Drive. The officer said he noticed one of the teenagers was on a cell phone because of the bright blue light coming from the phone. He told another officer about their whereabouts and continued his walk to find two opened 30-packs of Coors Light beer and a sneaker in the mud.

Police called the registered owner of the unattended vehicle, who was the father of one of the teens. When the man arrived, he informed police his son was supposed to be at a dance.

The officers eventually found the teens at the intersection of Meadowbrook Drive and Carver Road and arrested them. They were wet and muddy, standing on the edge of the roadway. One of the teens had no shoes on.
