New officer joins Tiverton police

TIVERTON — The ranks of officers in the Tiverton Police Department grew by one recently as Warren L. Caldwell III, 24, began his duties as a probationary patrolman with the department.

Officer Caldwell graduated from the 14-week Rhode Island Municipal Training Program on March 14, and started his field training with a senior officer on March 17. He was the top candidate in the last hiring process, said Deputy Chief Nicholas Maltais.

A 2007 graduate of Roger Williams University, with a B.S. degree in criminal justice, Officer Caldwell has lived in Rhode Island for 14 years. He was born in Jacksonville, Fla., but moved to the state when his father, a career Navy officer, was stationed in Newport. Officer Caldwell attended Middletown High School for two years, then graduated from high school at Valley Forge Military Academy in York, Penn., in 2003.

During his senior year in college, Officer Caldwell served as an intern with the Newport Police Department.

Asked how he likes Tiverton, Officer Caldwell said, "I love it. It's way more than I expected. It's a great town." He said he realized he wanted to get into police work his freshman year in college, and said he hopes to get into investigations and narcotics work.
