Chicken barbecue supports The Moving Wall
BRISTOL - A chicken barbecue on Sunday, Aug. 29, will help raise money for The Moving Wall's visit to Warren in October.
The barbecue will begin at 4 p.m. at the Warren Recreation Complex off Asylum Road. Tickets, $10 each, are available by calling 245-5431 and leaving a message.
The Moving Wall, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be on display at Burr's Hill Park from Oct. 11 to 17. It lists the names of the 58,234 servicemen and women who died in Vietnam or who are listed as missing in action, including 10 men from the East Bay.
T-shirts, hats and key chains commemorating The Wall's visit to this region will be sold at the barbecue. This is the final planned fund-raiser before The Wall's arrival.
Judith Fardig, who serves on The Moving Wall Committee, said they want to raise more money to pay for some "extras" in conjunction with the event. One extra is hosting a free "Support Our Troops" patriotic concert on Saturday, Oct. 16. Guests would be asked to bring items that can be used by Americans serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The 'extra' in this case would be the cost of packaging and shipping the items to Iraq and Afghanistan," said Bob Landry, another committee member. "We're looking at this as one generation of veterans Vietnam reaching out to our newest generation of veterans."
The Warren Association of Vietnam Veterans is sponsoring The Wall's visit, in conjunction with Warren Unit 11 of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Warren Barrington Rotary Club and the Town of Warren.
