The Portsmouth School Committee approved a one-year extension of Superintendent Ana Riley’s contract during its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
The extension resulted after Ms. Riley, having made it through to the final interview stages for the superintendent position in New Bedford, lost out to Randolph, Mass. Superintendent Thomas Anderson at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
Ms. Riley has held her current position in Portsmouth since the summer of 2014. According to the school’s website, the committee had applauded her efforts to maintain transparency and build trust with prominent stake holders during her time as superintendent of Dartmouth schools, implementing key programs such as Academic Summer School and the STAR common assessment tool into their system.
Though she has ideals of one day leading a diverse, urban district, Ms. Riley has enjoyed her time in charge of Portsmouth’s four schools and nearly 2,500 students, earning a spot as Rhode Island’s fifth-best public school district in the 2019 Niche School and District rankings.
The new school year begins Wednesday, Aug. 29.
