The Portsmouth Senior Center is having its annual yard sale in front of the center on Bristol Ferry Road this Thursday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 11. The Center works year-round to collect and care for donations in order to later resell them at affordable prices.
At the end of every summer season, members display all of the donations they have received that year on their front lawn, as well as in their air-conditioned auditorium. Items typically available for purchase include books, clothing, sunglasses, luggage, furniture, vinyl records and jewelry. There is also the opportunity for anyone interested in selling something of their own to rent a table or lawn space.
They will also be serving chorizo sandwiches, homemade desserts, fountain drinks and more made by the members of the senior center.
The yard sale helps to upkeep the costs of the senior center, as it is not owned by the town and has been self-sufficient in funding since the day it opened. After the school on the second floor was shut down due to safety codes and faulty sprinklers, the members have needed creativity and entrepreneurship to keep the center running as usual.
Over the years the center has received grants from the Town of Portsmouth but does all it can to provide the services of a fully functioning library, dining hall and thrift store for as long as possible. According to the members, they will do all they can to avoid needing the center to be purchased by the town entirely.
