Fund-raiser on Sunday, team seeking sponsors

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Pop Warner varsity cheerleading squad is headed to Orlando, Fla.

The squad earned a chance to compete in the Pop Warner National Cheerleading Championships on Dec. 3 by placing first at the RISMA (Rhode Island Southeastern Massachusetts) league competition as well as first at the New England Regional Championships on Nov. 4.

This is the fifth straight year the team has qualified for the national finals. The team finished in second place in the last two years of competition.

The 26 team members and seven coaches are now raising funds to offset the cost of the trip to the finals, including an opportunity to win four New England Patriots tickets, a 50/50 raffle, and an opportunity to win over 20 scratch tickets and gift cards.

The cheer team is also hosting a KFC-style chicken dinner on Sunday, Nov. 25, from 4-6 p.m. at the Portsmouth Portuguese American Citizens Club, at 35 Power St.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and under. Raffle tickets and dinner tickets can be purchased by contacting Tara Mello at tmello2@cox.net.

The team is also looking for local businesses that would be interested in sponsoring them. For a $100 donation, the name of the business will be listed on the team’s nationals T-shirt.

Donations can be sent to Portsmouth Youth Football at P.O. Box 793,  Portsmouth, RI 02871. For more information contact Carol Mureddu at 401/855-1701 or at rhscheer1115@gmail.com.
