PORTSMOUTH — A 21-year-old woman had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life after an early morning accident Thursday, May 10.

According to Police Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold, at about 5:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident after a resident of Statue Way reported hearing a loud crash noise.

Police found a disabled car near Patriot Park with the woman, who was alert, inside.

The Portsmouth Fire Department responded and had to utilize the Jaws of Life to extricate the woman from the vehicle.

Lt. Arnold said an investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling south on the Route 24 off-ramp near West Main Road when it lost control, collided with a guard rail and rolled over and down the embankment.

The woman was brought to a local hospital as a precaution, he said.
