Portsmouth Desert Shield, Desert Storm vets to be honored Monday

PORTSMOUTH — Local veterans of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm will be honored on Monday, Nov. 13, starting at 6 p.m. at Portsmouth Town Hall.

If you are a veteran who served during that era and did not receive notification by mail of this event, contact Carolyn Evans-Carbery by Sunday, Nov. 12, at 401/683-9375, or send an e-mail to foundersbrook@verizon.net.

In other news, American Legion Post 18 and VFW Post 5390 will host a Veterans Day ceremony entitled “Civil Preparedness: Disaster Response” at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Portsmouth Town Hall. The public is welcome.

A spaghetti dinner hosted by VFW Auxiliary Post 5390 will be held at the Alvaro E. Vieira VFW Post Hall on Anthony Road, Portsmouth, from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12. Veterans eat for free; a suggested $5 donation will be collected from others. The menu will offer salad, spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread and dessert.

The Disabled American Vets (DAV) Chapter 15 will hold its next meeting at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, in the conference room in the new Rhode Island Veterans’ Home in Bristol.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
