Letter: Short-sighted roadside ‘wisdom:’ So much for science

On the eve of Mother Nature’s recent winter storm whammy, a business with a prominent sign on Main Road jokes, “So much for global warming.” (The same marquee recently announced, “Thank You President Trump.”)

This reminds us of how we love comedy in public places.  The Middle Ages gave us roaming troupes of clowns, and now Tiverton has its own mocking challenge to the natural disruptions that folks see just past the end of their nose.  Ironically, the storm may be evidence of the disruption, but heedless minds live in their own reality.

Coming next — who knows?—maybe a sign by the road declaring that the earth is flat.

Let’s laugh while we can. The only alternative is to cry.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
