TIVERTON — The Tiverton Town Council last Tuesday night, Oct. 10, approved a contract to provide some real shade for Grinnell's Beach beach goers next season.

It awarded a $47,000 contract for the construction of a "sail shade" area at the beach to Probuilt Designs, LLC, of Marshfield, Massachusetts.

The company's bid "meets or exceeds" the bid specifications, said Department of Public Works Director Bill Anderson, and is $10,000 less than the second low bidder.

Warranties are for roughly 20 years for the steel framework and 15 years for the materials.

What's proposed is the installation of an estimated 1,100 square feet of shade — about the floor area of a small house, Mr. Anderson said — comprised of three roughly triangular pieces of durable material that will be strung between five posts anchored in the ground.

The anchoring choices, according to the bid discussion by Mr. Anderson. are five to nine feet deep into concrete embedded in the ground, or less deep (from four to six-and-a-half-feet deep) set on a wider base — decisions not yet made.

The price includes the sail shade structure itself, foundations, and backfill required for the installation. "Scheduling wise," said Mr. Anderson, "it is estimated to be three to four weeks until the product is on site, followed by 45 days to construct the foundation and install the system. This would put the sail-shade complete at the end of November, 2017."

That date marks the end of the current construction season, Mr. Anderson said.
