Fred Sawyer, 78, Portsmouth

Fred Sawyer, 78, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away on Sept. 13, 2018, in Newport.

Fred was born on April 2, 1940, in Lewiston, Maine to the late Fred W. Sawyer, Sr. and the late Ada (Emory) Sawyer. Fred was the husband of Marlene (Clark) Sawyer for 41 years.

Fred worked as a carpenter most of life. He proudly served in the 82nd Airborne Division before his career in carpentry. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards and restoring antique cars.

Besides his wife, Marlene, Fred is survived by his children, Fred W. Sawyer, III of Portsmouth, Scott Sawyer of Johnston, Vicky-Lynn Levada of Boerne, TX, Joseph Correia of Portsmouth, and Christy Brennan of Barrington; his siblings, M. Alton Sawyer, Dolores Paine, Elizabeth Wuori, Carl Sawyer, and Robert Sawyer; his grandchildren Gianna and Ciara Sawyer of Portsmouth, Hayden and Brendan Levada of Boerne, TX, and Zachary, Katie, Paul and Patrick Brennan of Barrington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Deanna Sawyer, and his brother, Leon Sawyer.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Sept., 22, 2018, from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home. His burial will take place in Portsmouth Cemetery on Turnpike Avenue, Portsmouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 245 Waterman St., Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906.
