Edward Steven Akucewich Jr., 81, husband of Paula Helene (Bert) Akucewich, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018 at home, surrounded by his family after a battle with ALS. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he was the son of Edward Steven and Josephine (Wojick) Akucewich. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Edward Steven Akucewich III (Kathryn), Guy Douglas Akucewich (Susan), and Lisa Helene Akucewich-Thomas (Randy), as well as 15 grandchildren. Ed and Paula had been married 60 years.

Edward graduated in 1955 from Tolman High School in Pawtucket. He was a Rhode Island All-State guard during high school. He played football at the University of Maine, where he graduated with a BS in 1959, and received his Master’s Degree in 1963 from the University of Hartford. He was a physical education teacher for 30 years at Portsmouth High School, as well as coach of the high school men’s and women's basketball teams and women’s softball teams. In addition, for many years, Ed taught driver’s education and motorcycle safety.   In Oct. 2017, Ed was inducted into the Portsmouth Athletic Hall of Fame in honor of his many contributions as a coach and educator during his career.

Ed and Paula raised their family in Barrington, living there for 53 years before moving Port St. Lucie, Fla. in 2016.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Faith Community Kitchen of the Faith Congregational Church, 2199 SW Savona Blvd, Port St Lucie, FL 34953 or the ALS Foundation in his name. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 10, at the Faith Congregational Church.

He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
