Co-founded Sakonnet Veterinary Hospital

Dr. William E. Condon, VMD, 71, of Portsmouth, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, with his loving family by his side. Dr. Condon was born April 10, 1946, in Joliet, Ill., the son of George C. and the late Mary (Stauffacher) Condon. He was the husband of Barbara E. (Shearman) Condon for 50 years.

Dr. Condon had a strong sense of commitment to his family that began early in his life under the example of strength and love set forth by his parents, Mary and George. When he was 16 years old he met the love of his life, Barbara, and they have been sweethearts ever since.

Dr. Condon received his Veterinary Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. In 1972, he and Ken Rix set up Sakonnet Veterinary Hospital on Main Road in Tiverton, where he practiced for over 41 years. He was passionate about his work, and the people and animals for whom he cared.

He was an active member of the community serving on the Portsmouth School Committee and various boards, and some of his favorite activities included coaching sports, singing in the Narragansett Bay Chorus, and participating in numerous clubs and guilds.

Bill loved life and lived it to its fullest. He was always looking for the next traveling adventure with Barbara or planning a trip to take with his entire family. He enjoyed camping, kayaking, biking, hiking, sporting events, and was especially enthusiastic about music and all aspects of photography. He was confident, intelligent, could talk his way out of anything and, as some knew, a bit mischievous. Life with Bill/Dad/Grandpa was always an adventure!

Bill was a devoted son to his mother and father and he cherished his time with them. Barbara was the one true love of his life and they complimented each other perfectly. Their love for each other was evident in everything they did. His children know that he could not have loved them more as he was very clear that he was proud of the people they had become, the people they had married, and the children they were raising. In return, he was equally loved, adored and admired. He considered himself to be “a happy man who understood and appreciated the great fortune of having a wonderful family”, and this will be the legacy his family carries on in his honor.

Besides his wife, Barbara, and his father, George, he is survived by his son, Jeffrey Condon and his wife Carolyn of Melrose, Mass.; three daughters, Heather Pillis and her husband Robert of Ipswich, Mass.; Corrie Quintard and her husband Shane of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and Katherine Parker and her husband Andrew of Lacey, Wash.; four sisters, Sue Guenther and her husband Bruce of Silver Spring, Md.; Elizabeth Glembocki and her husband Thomas of Apex, NC; Mary Benziger and her husband John of South China, Maine; and Holly Condon Hollister and her husband Darrel of Fairfax Station, Va. He also has nine grandchildren: Audrey Condon, Daphne Condon, Nathaniel Pillis, Addison Pillis, Anderson Pillis, Kayleigh Quintard, Caitlyn Quintard, Keagan Quintard and Emmaline Parker.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 16, from 4-7 p.m. at the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445 or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018.
