Donovan: My views and beliefs are ‘extreme’? Nonsense!

Posted

There are people in our community suggesting that my political views are “extreme.” Nonsense! What I do believe is that everyone should have access to affordable healthcare, that sensible gun legislation is a necessary component for safer communities, that small businesses need our support, that we should work to combat climate change and protect our natural resources.

I also believe workers deserve fair wages and women deserve fair pay, that college should not leave students with crippling debt and that we need to care for our veterans and seniors.

I believe we all deserve an ethical government that is working for us and not for special interests. I’m fighting for working families, affordable education, public schools, sensible gun laws and our environment. I’m fighting to bring transparency, integrity and positivity back to the state house. This is not extreme – it’s what’s needed to make our communities and Rhode Island stronger.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
