Andrew E. Singleton, 43, Portsmouth

Special Olympian loved music, dance and Disney

Andrew Edward Singleton, of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, R.I., passed peacefully at home, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016.

Born Oct. 17, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio, Andrew was the son of Dr. Edward Ernest Singleton and Karen Sorensen Singleton. He is survived by his brothers, Scott Robert Singleton and Ryan Norman Singleton, of St. Petersburg, and their wives Tonya and Amanda Singleton; as well as his beloved nieces and nephew, Hannah, Jacob, Cora, and Jane Singleton. Also, his uncles and aunt, Stephen and Bruce Singleton, Karl Sorensen, and Kelsey Hyman, their families, and countless cousins, extended family, and friends. To know Andrew was to be his friend, to love him and be loved in return.

Sports and activities were paramount throughout Andrew's early years. Not to be outpaced by his younger brothers, he was active in the Special Olympics, equestrian activities, and sporting events, dances and parties. In 1994, he graduated from Middletown High School to a rousing standing ovation by the crowd, which inspired the national news story, “Andrew's Hurrah,” featured in Reader's Digest.

Music and dance were lifelong joys of Andrew's, as well as the magic of Mickey Mouse and the world of Disney. A lifetime highlight was when the entire Singleton family embarked on a Disney Dream cruise to celebrate Andrew's 40th birthday.

Andrew was an absolute social butterfly who displayed care and concern for everyone around him for all of his days. From assisting others with canes and wheelchairs, to snuggling every baby he could, to holding hands with the nearest person and singing his favorite songs while liberally giving out kisses, Andrew touched the lives of all he met.

Andrew will always be remembered for his love, his light, his sense of humor (especially his knock-knock jokes), and his heart of gold. To say he will be deeply missed is a profound understatement.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Andrew’s memory may be made to SMART (Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy), 4640 CR 675 E Bradenton, FL 34211; or to the church.
