Owners, be aware of East Providence’s Homestead deadline

letter-head

To the editor,
Important!! Most homeowners in the City of East Providence did not receive a letter from the tax assessor’s office demanding that they complete an application to continue to benefit from the homestead property tax exemption. Only through “grapevine news” did I learn of this tonight.

Checking www.eastprovidence.com it is not easily found, but with diligent searching I was able to locate the letter dated Nov. 2, 2012 and the form of affidavit. The City of East Providence supposedly mailed a letter to all homeowners demanding that the homeowner complete and file an affidavit proving that he/she resides in his/her home and if the homeowner does not file the affidavit he/she will lose the homestead exemption property tax. The letter states the deadline is Nov. 30, but the affidavit states the deadline in Dec. 15. Homeowners should file your affidavit by Nov. 30 just to be safe.

The City claims in a letter dated Nov. 2, 2012 that “there was a problem with the original mailing, the printing vendor misaligned the owner and street address. All returned mail pieces are being remailed by the printer” and further that “responses remain due Nov. 30, 2012”.

The affidavit requires the homeowner to provide a signed and notarized affidavit, and copies of any 2 of the following documents:

  • 1) Federal income tax return
  • 2) R.I. vehicle registration
  • 3) Proof of R.I. voter registration (canvassing or https://sos.ri.gov/vic/search.php)
  • 4) R.I. drivers license or R.I. State ID
  • 5) Social security statement or bank statement

Please pass this info along to your friends and neighbors, the City has not made clear announcements either via the news media, direct contact with homeowners, or on its own website.
