To the editor:
Wow. That is one best word to describe the Veterans Appreciation Day on Saturday Aug. 16, at the Westport VFW on Route 6. I went with Westport resident Tom Lynn, a Marine Corps veteran, and got there at noon when the event began.
Glad we did. The parking lot rapidly filled up, and stayed full as people came and went. The non-stop entertainment was unbelievably talented, the food was delicious, and all the volunteers in booths, parking lot and elsewhere were extremely hard working and helpful to all guests.
Ruth Camara got things in spirit with a beautiful and moving National Anthem. Paul Cabral, Courtney, Gil Marks and Paul LaBonte continued to move us with singing of top caliber. “Seems like Old Times” barbershop quartet was great, and George Cataldo – would you believe age 87 – enthralled us with singing oldies -but-goodies and humor to boot. Cal Raye and Shindigs really rocked. We had to leave even as more talent waited to continue this fantastic day.
I supported the Westport veterans agent when I was town administrator 2002-2004, so especially enjoyed this return to Westport. If future years have more of these Veterans Appreciation Days as these vets have talked about, I hope the Westport community stands not only behind them but with them in this effort. Mission accomplished.
