To the editor:
I was surprised to see we have a Special Town Meeting scheduled for February 7. I understand it was scheduled quickly, but I am hopeful that Town Meeting will be able to generate meaningful discussion about the perceived necessity of changing an elected position to an appointed position. This seems like a big change in the way Westport conducts business, and we need to make the right decision. I expect that Chairman Spirlet can explain the board’s reasoning on why this discussion should happen now and how it will affect Westport. I expect that my fellow voters will be allowed to discuss their viewpoints and ask questions, and be given candid answers. I need to hear all of the conversation in order to feel good about the way I vote.
The only thing I do feel good about at this juncture is the opportunity to hear my fellow voters — and that the Town Meeting vote is just the first step in making this change. If this is accepted at Town Meeting, we at least have another chance to vote at the ballot box. I think I’m going to need that time to absorb what I hear at special town meeting.
