To the editor:

On the evening of Oct. 1, the Barrington Town Council voted 4-1 on the ordinance to ban single-use plastic bags at checkouts taking effect Jan. 2013. On behalf of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, I would like to sincerely thank the councilmembers for their decision and all those who voiced their support for this issue.

Banning plastic bags is the first step in the right direction.

Plastic bags are not only unnecessary and a waste of scarce resources, but they are also burdensome and costly to clean up, as many become loose in the environment. While plastic bags are only one part of the greater problem of plastic pollution, the ban should remind people to think about the products that they are using every day and how they can make lifestyle choices to reduce their impact on our Earth.

Thank you for being an environmental leader in Rhode Island and the country.
