To the editor:

The BAY Team, Barrington’s Adult Youth Team against substance abuse, would like to recognize the outstanding contributions of our Member of the Month, Dr. Achina Stein.

Dr. Stein has generously contributed her time to The BAY Team’s Prescription Drug Committee for nearly 3 years. This committee recently held a prescription drug-take back event which removed many pounds of unwanted drugs from the community. This service is essential to decreasing access to youth and others who might abuse the medications and also helps preserve the environment.

Furthermore, Dr. Stein helped bring a more permanent solution to the removal of unwanted medications. Barrington is now one of only two communities in Rhode Island with a prescription drug drop-off box. Community members can now bring their unwanted medications to the Barrington Police Station anytime, any day.

Keeping youth engaged and active is another effective way to encourage healthy choices. Dr. Stein and her family operate the town’s Ultimate Frisbee team for grades 5 and up which practices at the middle school.

The BAY Team appreciates individuals like Dr. Achina Stein for her invaluable commitment of service to the youth of Barrington.

Sincerely,

Kristen Westmoreland, MD MPH
