Letter: Writing in support of same-sex marriage

letter-head

To the editor,
As a priest at Church of the Epiphany in Rumford and as a gay man, I am writing to express my support for marriage equality in Rhode Island.
At my ordination, one of the vows I made was to “build up the family of God.” Although I am called to build up the family of God in church by baptizing people, absolving them of their sins and offering them Christ’s Body and Blood in the Eucharist, I am also called to build up this family beyond the walls of the church. This means creating a world where people can embrace the freedom bestowed on them by God, including the freedom to marry. When people who love one another are free to marry, the family of God and families everywhere are built up.
I know this is true from my encounter with couples in my congregation as well as from my personal experience. After six years together, my partner Michael and I recently got engaged. When we decided to get married, we did so because we believe that our love, like any couple’s love, will be strengthened by marriage.
Jesus once said that no one after lighting a lamp puts it under a bushel basket. Instead, they put it on a lamp stand so that it can give light to all in the house.
Michael and I believe that the love we share is a light. Like the love shared by straight couples, our love gives light to our families, churches and communities. It makes all of us stronger.
