Letter: Thanks for help on Portsmouth beach cleanup

To the editor:

On Sept. 21, the Portsmouth Conservation Commission hosted the annual International Coastal Cleanup survey cleanup of Pheasant Hill Beach, sponsored by the Rhode Island Audubon Society.

We were joined by Dorothy Kracik, Amelia Kracik, Sabrina Barandiaran, Sabrina Petrie, Elizabeth Wheeler and Debbie Barandiaran, members of Girl Scouts Troop 725, and Diane and Michael Brown.

Of the approximately 90 pounds of trash we picked up, most was from the bushes above the high tide line, and this is after local residents pick up trash on their regular walks.

It is very unfortunate that a beautiful area is spoiled by people who cannot be bothered to carry out what they have brought in. We found many bottles, cans, cups, cigarette butts and even a half-dozen dirty diaper bags.

Let’s hope for better results next year, and thanks again to everyone who is helping out.
