To the editor:
I am writing to thank local leaders Ken Marshall and Ray Gallison for their votes in favor of the marriage equality legislation that recently passed the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Marriage equality is indeed a civil rights issue, and as the wide margin of victory in the house indicates, the time has come to extend marriage to all loving and committed couples in our state.
Allowing our gay neighbors, friends and relatives the freedom to marry in Rhode Island is not only the just thing to do — it’s also smart. Marriage equality will generate business in both the hospitality and tourism industries, and will make our state more attractive to other businesses as well. Beautiful waterfront communities like Bristol — with fabulous wedding venues like Blithewold and Mt. Hope Farm– stand to benefit in particular.
I urge Senators David Bates and Chris Ottiano to follow the wise and courageous lead of their counterparts in the House by bringing marriage equality legislation to the floor and voting yes!
