Letter: Portsmouth 375th polar plunge a great success

portsplunge-best1To the editor:

The yearlong celebration of the Town of Portsmouth’s 375th birthday ended with a polar dive on the last day of the year, Dec. 31, at Island Park Beach.

It was gratifying to see that large crowd of people who came out to the beach to participate in or support our final event of the celebration year. It was a fitting way to close out an exceptionally successful series of events that really helped bring the community closer together.

Following the dive The Beach House Bar and Grill hosted an after-party with refreshments generously donated by Portsmouth restaurants: Carmella’s, Chase Pizza and Deli, China Gourmet, Cindy’s Country Café, Dunkin’ Donuts (East Main Road), Dunkin’ Donuts (West Main Road), Fatigati’s Fresh Pasta, Fieldstones, Food Works, Green Valley Country Club, New China, North End Pizza, Portsmouth Publick House, Rocco’s Little Italy, Steve’s Famous Pizza and West Main Pizza.

It also could not have been done without the support of numerous volunteers at the beach, setup at the Beach House and refreshment pickup. Special thanks to Walter Gray, Emil Cipolla, Carolyn Magnus and Ray Berberick, Jan Gump, Nancy Smith, Janice Valevonna, Lori Clarke and Jane Roggerio.

Special thanks to the Portsmouth Police Department for traffic control and Portsmouth Fire Department for the on-site rescue vehicle and bonfire construction. Thanks to the pallets, courtesy of Cotran Corp and wood-haulers John Vitkevich, Mick Buckley, Reggie Williams, Mike Menesse, Jamie Freitas and Chris Carreiro. All those wet souls appreciated the warmth of the fire as they came out of the water.

Barbara McGann, with the highest pledge money received, was awarded dinner for four courtesy of 15 Point Road Restaurant.
