I have been vigilant against food stamp waste

To the editor:

I would like to set the record straight with regard to welfare reform. Contrary to the  letter to the editor in the June 13 Westport Shorelines, I care very much about even the smallest abuse and waste.

The House FY 2014 budget, for which I voted, contains the requirement that EBT cards be issued with photo IDs. In April 2012, I voted for measures that limit the use of EBT cards for purchasing alcohol, lottery tickets, tobacco, firearms, travel services, health clubs and more. By the same vote I supported reform that prohibits the use of direct cash assistance outside of the Commonwealth except for emergencies.

I, along with my colleagues in the House, am vigilant and sensitive to abuses that undermine the public trust in government.  There is more that can be done, such as searching other governmental agency data bases, and I am confident that we will make progress on this front.
