To the editor:
Did you know that the Tiverton Food Pantry receives approximately 300 visits and distributes 6,000 pounds of food per month to those in our community? That equates to around 120 families utilizing pantry services each month.
Such numbers should give us pause and help us realize that the problem of hunger is alive and well in our neck of the woods.
With that as a backdrop, the Tiverton Town Council is sponsoring a holiday food drive between November 27 and December 17 to benefit the Tiverton Food Pantry at the East Bay Community Action Program center on Stafford Road. Donations can be dropped off at Town Hall on Highland Road during normal business hours and after-hours meetings.
Especially needed are foods high in protein (peanut butter, tuna, canned beans), carbohydrates (healthy breakfast cereals, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, granola), and canned fruits and veggies.
On behalf of my colleagues on the council, I would like to thank you for your generosity this holiday season. Nothing defines a community more than its ability to come together to help a neighbor in need.
Tiverton Town councilor
Editor’s note: Families can also drop off food at any Tiverton school office. All food collected at the schools will be transported by a parent volunteer to Town Hall on Dec 17.
