Bridge done, time is right for bike path

To the editor:

With the construction of the new Sakonnet River Bridge coming to a conclusion, one of the added benefits will be the walk/bike path on the bridge.

It has been a long term effort, over 12 years to get an off-road bike path in Tiverton within the rail right-of-way, alongside Mount Hope Bay. That proposal has been placed on the RI Transportation Improvement Plan for that length of time. With the path on the bridge completed, hopefully RIDOT will seriously consider the construction of the bike path from the bridge to the Massachusetts line.

This is a facility that the residents of Tiverton and the South Coast region of Newport County have been looking forward to for many years. There is a need for a safe off-road biking/walking path in this area for recreational use as well as the indirect health, and economic benefits that such paths offer to the public. With the eventual extension of the path to Newport, it would be another mode of transportation to that city.

To support this effort we will need to contact our local and state representatives to provide an impetus to have the RIDOT get this path in place.
