2013 brings key challenges to Portsmouth School Committee

To the editor:

To all Portsmouth citizens I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the support you have given me to serve on the Portsmouth school board. It is a privilege and I am honored by the trust you have shown in me. I will be committed to ensuring a quality education for every student in our system. As a public official, I recognize my responsibility to serve to the best of my ability all constituents. To that end, I will make every effort to listen and understand all views expressed by Portsmouth citizens, and to answer any and all questions posed to me.

I am also extremely privileged to be serving with Chairman Croston, Vice Chair Cortvriend, Mr. Vadney (committee clerk), Ms. Copeland, and Mr. Kelly. These individuals bring with them experience, commitment and dedication to our school system.

There is much work ahead of us in 2013. Collective bargaining, strategic planning, and formulating a budget for next fiscal yea, are just a few of the tasks in front of us. Without question, one of our highest priorities will be to review the security that is in place at all of our schools, and in collaboration with the administration and law enforcement agencies, make any capital improvements required to ensure our children have a safe and secure learning environment.
I encourage all interested citizens, especially parents of school age children, to attend our meetings as time permits. We have a great school system, and I believe our accomplishments to date have been achieved by the incredible community involvement and our outstanding teachers. Working together I believe we can reach new highs in student achievement in the years to come.

My best wishes to all of you during this holiday season, and may 2013 bring us all peace and happiness.
