Letter: Don’t trash on the 4th… Recycle

To The Editor,

As we enter the “home stretch” of the 4th of July season, Bristol Recycles wants to alert all concert goers and parade watchers that we have two great opportunities to capture recycling materials:

  • During the concert series and with the support of the 4th of July Committee, the Bristol Police Department and the Department of Public Works, 90 gallon green recycling bins (look for the triangular recycle symbol on the sides of the bins) are being placed around Independence Park. We ask that you deposit your soda cans, plastic and glass bottles, etc. into these receptacles and NOT in the trash bags that are also provided. Each night, the DPW will pick up both the recycling and trash. With your cooperation we can make a difference.
  • For the parade itself: We are asking the 250 homeowners who live along the parade route to put their personal home blue bin by the curb on the morning of the Parade. The DPW will make a special recycling pickup soon after the parade concludes and leave your empty blue bin back in front of your home. Trash bags are placed along the route by the 4th of July Committee to keep Bristol clean. Now, with homeowners support, we can give the parade goer the opportunity to recycle too. Parade route homeowners, please look for a door hanger this week reminding you of this simple request: Put out your blue recycle bin on the morning of July 4th.

Your BRISTOL RECYCLES committee continues to work on improving our recycle rate. Bristol Total Fitness is now recycling, the Santo Cristo Festival recycled for the first time. A proposal to require organizations that use public property for an event be responsible for recycling is being considered by the Town Council, etc..

The most important step we can take is for every home in Bristol to make recycling a lifestyle choice! It’s easy, it saves tax dollars and protects our environment. Let’s do this together!
