Wendy B. Hirtle, of Barrington

A two-year Barrington resident, Wendy B. Hirtle, the beloved wife of Michael Hirtle died peacefully at the Philip Hulitar Home and Hospice Center in Providence on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Born in Stamford Conn., daughter of Charles Allan (Bop) and the late Helen Pomeroy (Moots) Borchert, she is survived by her father, her husband, her brother William Pomeroy Borchert, of Collinsville Conn., and her sister Laurie Smith of Hollis, N.H. Also surviving are her two children, two stepchildren, their spouses and five grandchildren. Sam and Amanda Robinson of Virginia Beach, and son Devlin; Kevin and Amanda Hart of Barrington, and sons Charlie and William; Andy and Leah Brown of Philadelphia and son Justin and daughter Katrina; and Andrew and Aracelli Hirtle of Alexandria Virginia.

Mrs. Hirtle received a degree in physical therapy at the Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. and practiced as a home health LPT in Haddonfield, N.J. and Gloucester, Mass. Her husband works in the toy and game industry and they lived together in Haddonfield from their marriage in Nov. 1987 until moving to Gloucester in 1998. In 2000 they moved to Somers, Conn. before coming to Barrington in 2010.

Wendy’s greatest joy was her children and grandchildren for whom she created countless keepsakes of handmade cards, photo books and other handiworks.

She was also devoted to her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, James and Betsy. James worked with Mrs. Hirtle as a pet therapy and reading therapy dog.

In recent years Wendy devoted serious study to the poet Emily Dickinson, an ancestor of her family.

A simple family gathering in her memory is planned at the Hawk’s Nest Beach in Old Lyme, Conn., a place of great significance for Wendy and her entire family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Hirtle’s memory can be directed to the Jimmy Fund of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
