Mrs. Virginia A. (Palumbo) Sousa, age 79, of 6 Fernwood Road, Bristol, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013 at Courtland Place, Greenville, R.I. She was the beloved wife of Henry “Gunga” Sousa, her husband of 59 years.
Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Leonardo and Gaetana (Piemontese) Palumbo.
Virginia was a textile worker starting her career with the former Bristol Manufacturing Company, then Converse Rubber Co., and finally with the former PF Industries in Bristol where she retired from in1980 after 30 years.
She was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Bristol and loved spending time cooking for family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dr. Kenneth J. Sousa of Smithfield and a brother, Frank L. Palumbo of Bristol.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Jean Sousa and a brother, Matthew Palumbo and four sisters, Philomena Barboza, Mary Di Paulo, Anna Oliver and Antonetta Amaral.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St.
Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street.
Visitation will be Monday morning only starting at 9 a.m.
