William T. “Sonny” Manchester, 92, of Little Compton, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at St. Anne’s Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of the late Rose (Medeiros) Manchester. Born and raised in Little Compton he was the son of the late Edward L. and Mattie F. (Simmons) Manchester.
Mr. Manchester was A U.S. Army veteran serving his country in World War II. He was a self-employed landscaper and was the former caretaker of Hillside Cemetery, Tiverton, for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, Little Compton Post # 37, and was known as the Pumpkin Man on West Main Road.
He leaves behind two sons, William L. Manchester and Thomas E. Manchester, both of Little Compton; seven daughters, Ann Brooks of Little Compton, Helen Tarter of South Dennis, Rosemary Johnson of Conway, SC, Constance Bonenfant of New Hampshire, Dorothy Manchester of Little Compton, Susan Reis of Little Compton and Debra Alvernes of Little Compton; one sister, Susan Heinz of New York; 19 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Paul Manchester and brother of the late Elizabeth Young and Virginia Cordeiro.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be Saturday, July 27, at 10 a.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Tiverton.
