Sister. Hortense Amaral tiffSr. Hortense D. Amaral, 87, a Sister of Saint Dorothy, passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 at Grace Baker Nursing Home.
Born in East Providence, she was a daughter of the late Antonio Amaral Pereira and Hortencia (George) Amaral.
She entered the Sisters of Saint Dorothy on Feb. 19, 1944 and professed her final vows on September 8, 1954. Sister Hortense was a Teacher, Principal and Religious Education Coordinator. She had assignments in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York. Sister also served at Saint Elizabeth’s Parish in Bristol in several different parish ministries.
In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Saint Dorothy, she leaves one sister, Sylvia Travers of Somerset and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary, Angelina, Anthony, Joseph, Manuel, George, August, James, John and William.
Her funeral will be held on Friday at 7:45 a.m. from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Church on Wood Street in Bristol.
Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 3 – 6 pm.
