Mary R. Schmidt, 83, Westport

MarySchmidt-photoMary Richardson Schmidt died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2013, of pneumonia at her home in Cambridge with her family present; she was 83. She was a summer resident of Westport.

She attended York Collegiate Institute – York County Academy and Chatham Hall in Virginia before earning a BA in History at Smith College in 1951, a MA in Sociology and Anthropology at Boston University in 1954, a MA in City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania in 1957, and a PhD at MIT in 1988.

She spent most of her career in planning, including the Citizens Council on City Planning in Philadelphia, the Delaware County Planning Commission, Boston’s Metropolitan Area Planning Association and the Boston Redevelopment Agency. She also served as the president of the Massachusetts Section of the American Planning Association.

She was married to William A. Doebele, a professor of planning at Harvard University, from 1958 to 1968. She lived for one year in Indonesia helping to establish a city planning program at the Bandung Institute of Technology. Her ex-husband and her three sons, Justin, Samuel and William Doebele, survive her.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Chapel at the Episcopal Divinity School at 99 Brattle Street, Cambridge, to be followed by a reception. A second service will be held in York, Penn., at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. Online guest book at www.brownandhickey.com.
