Mary (Dawes) Armknecht of Scottsdale, Az., formerly of Dover and Westport, Mass., died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012. She was the wife of Robert for 51 years and the mother of Robert Armknecht Jr. (and Karen) of Scottsdale, Az., and of Susan Armknecht (and Craig Tobias) of Groton, Conn.
Mary’s life was devoted to her family to whom she provided warmth and support and her unconditional love. Outside the home, Mary served on the Ladies Committee of the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Warrant Committee and the Board of Selectmen of the town of Dover.
Mary was an accomplished horticulturalist, participating in the design of prize winning gardens in the New England Flower Show. She was a national horticulture judge for the Garden Club of America, and a member of the Noanet Garden Club, Perennial Planters Garden Club and the Little Compton Garden Club as well as the Handicraft Club of Providence and the Chilton Club.
In addition to her immediate family, Mary is survived by two grandchildren, Caroline and Graham; her sister, Gussie Stewart (and John); brothers, Harry (and Nancy), and Dexter (and Jeanne); and 19 nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at St. Dunstan’s Church, Dover at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC, 20090.
