Manuel Raposa, 94, of Oliver Street passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7 at St. Elizabeth Manor.

He was the husband of Maria (Raposo) Raposa.

Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Manuel Raposo Salema and Francisca Furtado Salema.

He is survived by his children Paul and his wife Maria Raposa, George and his wife Silvia Raposa and Mary Ellen Raposa; grandchildren Isabella Raposa, Tania Rottger, Antone Mello and Luis Raposa.

He was employed as a wire worker for Kaiser Aluminum for 38 years before retiring.

To all who knew him, Manny was known as a hard worker, a gifted gardener and cook, and a person of unwavering character and principle.

He was born in Bristol, and moved to the island of San Miguel with his parents as an infant.  He returned to Bristol in his mid-20s where he lived the remainder of his life.  He was married to his beloved Maria for 56 years, for whom his love seemed to grow in intensity until his last moment on this earth.  He loved his family, this town, the Fourth of July parade and this country.  He often stated “God Bless America” when relaying his thanks for everything he was able to accomplish in the nation in which he chose to live.

He was a congregant of St Elizabeth’s Church, a member of the Bristol Sports Club and the Lincoln Club.

He built a home on Oliver Street where he and Maria raised their family, and where he established a varied and extensive garden and carved out his piece of the American Dream.  His last days were spent surrounded by his family, and beside his cherished Maria.

His funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, 577 Wood St.

Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol.

Calling hours are Thursday, Sept. 12 from 5-8 p.m.
