Mr. Joseph Hector “Herky” Masse, 91, of Bristol, and formerly of New Bedford, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014. He was born in New Bedford on Oct. 21, 1922, to parents Donat and Alpheda (Desruisseaux) Masse. He was married to Mary L. (Dyer) Masse and Francoise E. (Noury) Masse, both deceased.
Hector grew up on Central Avenue in New Bedford and worked and was a partner in the family-owned Masse’s Machine Shop, with his brothers, Michael and Robert Masse. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 during World War II and served for four years as a Machinist’s Mate on the USS Guadalcanal and USS Bennington and received numerous awards. He loved his family, sharing Navy stories, dancing, fishing and magic tricks.
Mr. Masse is survived by his son, Robert P. Masse (and wife Lana) of Paducah, Kentucky, his daughter, Susan Costa (and husband Robert) of Bourne, Mass., 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and most cherished friend, Vera Alosi of Riverside.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 15, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.
