James Michael Silvia, 47, of Portsmouth, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. Anne’s Hospital. James was a loving dad, grandfather, brother, uncle, son and friend to many. Born and raised in Portsmouth, he stayed close to his roots and his family.

James volunteered many hours with his brother Kevin and sister Cynthia “Cindy” at the Portuguese American Club, cooking and serving food for countless fund-raising events.
He is the son of Fredrick Silvia of Bellingham, Mass., and the late Ann (Souza) Silvia of Portsmouth.
James leaves behind a son, James M. Silvia Jr.; a stepson, Gerard Fournier; a daughter, Ariel Silvia both of Tiverton; a brother, Kevin Silvia of Portsmouth; three sisters, Cynthia (Silvia) Fontaine and Cheryl Perry, both of Tiverton, Stephanie Detusa of North Carolina; a grandson, Graiden Silvia; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle, cousins and many, many friends.
There will be a memorial mass on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 9 a.m. at Jesus Savior Church, 509 Broadway, Newport. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
