Gerald T. Kidd (Gerry), 78, passed away quietly in Fort Myers, Florida, on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. He was the husband of Myrna Thistlewaite Kidd. Gerry was a long-time resident of Portsmouth who moved to North Ft. Myers, Fla., in 2001.
Born in Fall River, Mass., on June 28, 1935, he was the son of the late Thomas W. Kidd Jr. and the late Dorothy McMann Kidd. Gerry graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River and attended a post graduate course at Moses Brown School in Providence, after which he graduated with an associate degree in engineering from Wentworth Institute. In 1956 he enlisted in the US Navy.
Over the years Gerry owned and operated a number of businesses including a rock quarry, a coal distributor, a used car lot, a general contracting company, and a marine construction business that built many of the breakwaters and seawalls along the New England shore. Gerry was an avid boater for most of his life and enjoyed sipping a rum and coke which he affectionately would call Koo-Koo Juice on his boat named Rip Rap with his beloved ****-Tzu dog, Bear.
Gerry is survived by his wife Myrna of Ft Meyers; his son Thomas W. Kidd and his wife Jacqueline, of Los Angeles, Calif.; his son Jeffrey Kidd and his wife Tina of Las Cruces, NM,; his grandson Benjamin Kidd and his fiancé Anna Marion of Little Compton; and a great-grandson, Logan Kidd of Little Compton; as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his brother Donald Kidd and his wife, Ann, of Portsmouth, and his sister Lois Clement and her husband Cap Willey, also of Portsmouth.
At the request of the family, funeral services will be private and a memorial remembrance will be held in Portsmouth at a later date.
